Long Weekend Part I The Sports Edition

The weekend started Thursday for me. Will from BeTheMarriage and his own blog was in town and we met up for drinks. Nerd discussions aplenty. One of the things I hypothesized is sports nerds love losing teams. Will is a die hard Mets/Jets fan. I confessed my former obsession with the Mavericks. It reminds me of the Jets Joke that Artie always issues.

What’s the difference between the Jets and women?
The Jets will always fuck you.

Also, I have a theory that all baseball fans are fans cause their dads are fans. I have never enjoyed baseball. My dad has never taken me to a baseball game much less any sporting event. I have been to Ranger games and just don’t get it. I was at Nolan Ryan’s last no hitter and it was one of the most boring things I’ve ever seen. I prolly got the most interested in baseball when I was in college cause my friends were and when my father-in-law lived with us.
I explained my utter contempt for the Cowboys. Growing up in the DFW area meant you lived and died by the Cowboys. Local news will lead with news on Romo’s pinky over the war or the economy. I will note that I am a Romo fan. He’s one of the few in pro sports that earns his pay. He started as a back up and earned the contract. Yes, he’s not been the clutch guy but I’m still a fan. I have a hard time routing for TO. The showboating aspect of sports is for the lowest common denominator fan. I bailed on the Cowboys the day Landry was let go. Jerry’s a dick and that was a dick move.
I left the Mavericks when Finley left. He was the last player I really liked. The NBA has been a business and when he was released, it finally hit me. I don’t cheer for IBM and I don’t cheer for the Mavericks. I wanted to like Josh Howard but man, he’s not a great guy. Dirk is just boring and has no defense.
I want to note here that sports nerds are sports fans that are obsessive like Ogilvie and not Uncle Rico’s. They may or may not have played the game but talk more about their team than what they did back in the day. Odds are they prolly didn’t play though.

Will also turned me on to some music I need to find, podcasts I’ve added to iTunes and a Patton Oswalt pilot called “Super Nerds”.
I tracked down the pilot from 2000. Whoa, it’s not good. I love Patton, but maybe if he wrote it today it would be better. It also has Brian Posehn and Sarah Silverman. The jokes are very inside. The premise is almost Clerks in a comic book store.
Other than that, Will and I traded some of Patton’s best material. Mine always focused on the midget jokes. Will and I seem to have the same taste in comedians and other areas of pop culture. I knew nothing of his music references. Another observation, music nerds like the most obscure thing possible. His first concert, Elvis Costello. He’s truly an awesome dude.

Friday was Spencer’s last high school game. All season long they got their asses handed to them. They failed to win one game. Everyone, friends and family, turned out for this. So strangely enough, Wills Point had a tie at the half. They managed to score a safety and a touchdown to take the lead 16-14 in the 4th. Everyone around me is fucking whooping and hollering. I tell them “Wait for it” The coaches here fail to keep any motivation going for these kids. EVERY FUCKING GAME they fold with 2 minutes left in a half. So I tell everyone to wait cause it ain’t over. Sure enough at 1:59 they fumble. All I can think is NOT FUCKING AGAIN.
Somethings should never happen in life. Chad Michael Murray should never have another acting job and YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE A REBUILDING YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL.
This year they have had their asses handed to them. Spencer was voted unanimously one of the team captains. He’s taken the losses personally. He has decided that he doesn’t want to play college football and I think it’s from this year’s experience. He never quit. He always showed up to all the practices. He went to the summer work outs that we not required. So I asked one thing, get your grades up. I was hopeful that he could get a scholarship to help pay for school. So what does he do? Gets his grades up to go from 37th in his class to 16th. Yea, he’s pretty fucking awesome.
So back to the game and with under 2 minutes Wills Points has to stop any momentum that started with this fumble. For the first time all year long something went our way. We had an interception. All we had to do was mange the clock. Awkwardly we accomplished this!
So the season ended, no tears from team or family and thanks to Terry for getting some great pics.
