Sports Moments
I’m watching the opening to the 2008 Olympics and thinking about the sporting events I’ve seen in my life. This popped in my head cause I recall seeing the 1980 US “Miracle on Ice” game. I was at my grandparents and sports was a big thing with my grandfather. “Paw-Paw”. Don’t ask me where that nickname came from but it’s what I called him. I was also named after him so for those that know my middle name, there’s that. Anyhow, I was watching sports with Paw-Paw and hockey comes on. Two items of note here.
1. Yes I was old enough to see the 1980 Olympics. I was 9 and this is prolly my earliest sports watching memory.
2. Being from the South, I had NEVER seen hockey before.
So, I have to go bed cause I’m 9 and they are old. I asked if I can watch this while I’m in bed.
Little did I know, I was watching THE GREATEST moment in sports history. I mean everything James Bond had taught me at this point was USSR was the bad guys and we’re playing the bad guys!
The game was very fast and confusing for a 9 year old but fun.
I still get chills when I hear the call.
Since then I’ve debated this moment for the best cause sometimes it not always about winning.
Sadly, I doubt we will see a moment like this ever again.

Anyhow, I’ve seen quite a few events but really never blogged about them. So here’s a short list of some of the event that I recall.
- Jordan live at Moody v. Mavericks
- Beckham live at FC Dallas with Daniel, Lori and Spencer.
- My college in the NCAA last year in NOLA with Spencer, Shawn and Daniel.
- Nolan Ryan’s last no hitter with Clay Stewart and some other Talons from UNT.
- UT, A&M and OU home games (These were all home games they had against UNT when I was a student and great road trips.)
- (Almost) floor tickets to a Mavs game that was so close I could hear Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf’s Tourette syndrome and we (my only Mav friend at the time, Eddie) were lower than Dikembe Mutombo.
- Watching Muhammad Ali light the torch at the 1996 Olympics on Lori’s couch while everyone else slept.
- Met my favorite Maverick of all time, Derek Harper and asking a stupid fan question.
- Sat 2nd row for a Dallas Stars game on NYE with Jessica, Jamie, Rob and Deb.
- While I’ve been to many Maverick games (former fan), few Ranger games (never liked baseball), few Stars games (fan), few FC Dallas games (fan), I have attended 1 preseason Dallas Cowboy game which means it was in Aug. and hot and was as fun as Oceanic flight 815.
- Been to Cowboys training camp with Terry, Kyle and Shawn.
- Attended every level of Texas High School football (5A, 4A, 3A. 2A) except 1A and 6-man. Including playoffs.
- Attended Dallas Freeze and Dallas Tornado’s games.
- Seen World Cup games (with Stacy) though I can’t recall what games they were.
One hope for this list is to see Spencer play college ball…
at UNT…
in a bowl game…
and say “HI, CLAY!” to the camera.
no pressure, Spencer.
